A new vision for job satisfaction as women in STEM

A new vision for job satisfaction as women in STEM

Job satisfaction. As women working in STEM positions in higher education, many of us quietly experience an internal struggle. On one hand, we’re grateful for what we’ve achieved. And on the other hand, we feel increasingly disillusioned by the relentless demands of the system.

We’re not sure how we’ll keep up and still have energy to enjoy ‘life’. Yet we’re not sure how to improve the situation either. Or, whether it’s even possible in this environment.

It’s an emotionally charged situation to be in. Which can also feel extremely draining and lonely. Not one that most of us would intentionally choose to ‘survive’ in over the long term.

So what can we do about it, rather than simply tell ourselves to ‘get over it’?

What if we could experience more job satisfaction by rewriting the rules and setting the standard with a new vision for how we work in higher education as women in STEM?

We can.

Not by figuring out what WE have to change or compromise about ourselves to be deemed promotable.

Not by simply dreaming about a better situation that we feel we’ve earned after all our hard work (but staying trapped and resentful in the feeling that the chips are stacked against us).

Not by putting on a suit of armor to go to work every day so we can withstand the battle against the demands, biases, and bureaucratic restrictions of the system.

That’s what we’ve spent years (even decades) doing in an effort to fulfill all of the pressures within work that give us a feeling of productivity and accomplishment.

Ironically, it’s totally UNSUSTAINABLE and has left us EXHAUSTED, DOUBTING ourselves, and charging down the road to BURNOUT.

IT’S TIME FOR A DIFFERENT APPROACH. A NEW VISION. ONE THAT IS SUSTAINABLE.

Let’s stop the well ingrained outward focus on solving problems, strategizing on external challenges, and EFFORTING our way to a successful STEM career in Higher Ed.

Instead, let’s start focusing IN on us as individuals.

Because that’s where our power to create true SUCCESS with SATISFACTION lies.
